When I got my OLPC XO laptop I discovered that it had a speech synthezier but no user interface for it. So I decided to change that. I wrote a simple interface that lets you type stuff, hear it spoken aloud and watch an animated face move around as it speaks. The mouth animates with the volume of the voice, so it looks like the face is talking. You can pick the accent for the voice, adjust the rate and pitch as well as the number of eyes, shape of the mouth and so forth. Kids love it. In fact the OLPC community liked it so much that it is now included by default on all deployed OLPC laptops. That means that millions of children now have a talking face on their laptop. Neat :)
