This is my entry for Mini LD #14. The theme was Comedy and Tragedy. My collaborator Matt Webb had the excellent idea of making a game based on Don Quixote. Here it is...

Use the arrow keys to move and X to jump.

Here is a log of my progress:

Saturday 12:30 AM

With everything else going on this weekend, I know I won't have much time to work on this, but I'm going to at least try to make *something* even if I don't formally enter it. My friend Matt has offered to help out.

Here are some screenshots of the game in progress.

I took the Flixel sample game called Mode, and followed the tutorials for adding a jetpack and tossed in some code to read tilemaps that are made with the free tilemap editor called Tiled (I'm using the java version). I scaled everything up to 16x16 instead of 8x8 tiles so I have room for more detail if needed later. Using transparent tiles in layers lets me add foreground/background and shadow effects.

Saturday 11:30 PM

Added bonus items that enhance your jump, jetpack and bullets.

Added moving platforms. They don't work quite right yet, but they are functional.

Monday 12:18 AM

Theme and some ideas for artwork coming into place. Most of the art is sampled from works by Gustave Doré.

Good thing the entry deadline for this one is flexible :) Also keep in mind that I do have a family and a fulltime job, so only a fraction of the elapsed time was spent on this...

Tuesday 11:30 PM

Then I spent the last 30 minutes making new audio with cfxr and Audacity.

Done!
